My first lesson with Dexter was at his mother's house on 45th St, LA (around 1946-48)& I loaned him my Conn Conqueror tenor. I was 16 and very much in awe of him. Because of his influence, I became known as "Little Dex". He was one of the great influences of my life. His amazing full, rich sound, which was uniquely his own, is what I admire the most. So much humor, joy and LOVE! Dexter never fails to bring a smile to my face. I studied with his protege Hadley Caliman and Prof. Caliman remains a friend and mentor. Dexter is a constant source of happiness and inspiration. Added: October 7, 2007 X |

I'm so happy to find this site! Dexter is my major influence on tenor sax, I collect his music on CD's (already have over 70 albums), I also transcribed many of his solos (over 20) and my admiration for his open heart musical approach is timeless. Many thanks for putting this on web :-) Jakub Added: August 15, 2007 X |

The greatest tone ever! If Dexter wasnt a great player with great ideas he would still have the greatest tone in history and always in control. I was lucky enough to see Dexter maybe 8-10 times . Alwa**tayed through every set , every note. Added: August 14, 2007 X |
