I was fortunate to see Dexter Gordan perform at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C. in the early 80's...It was a great perfomance. I'm reminded of that show each time I play the 'Round Midnight' soundtrack or see a replay of the movie. Added: December 10, 2006 X |

I play tenor sax. My top influences are: Dexter Gordon,Pete Christlieb, Gary Foster, my teacher Phil Feather,Eddie Harris, Bird , Trane, Ernie Watts,Michael Brecker, and a cast of 100's. I am fascinated by Dex's humor and personality which, in conjuction with his musical quotations, mastery of the horn/jazz chords&choice of notes, sets him apart, ie: use of the Altered scale,(diminished whole tone.) All the best!...Robert Added: September 21, 2006 X |

I was fortunate enough to meet Dexter in 1980. He was here to do a concert at the the St. Joseph's Performance Center. I picked up and Kirk Lightsey up from the airport, and had a fantastic time getting to know a little about these wonderful musicians. I'll always cherish that brief encounter. I have never loved a musician as much as I love Dexter Gordon. I can always "name that tune" when listening to just a note or two from his horn. I always dreamed that I would be able to have the opportunity to sing with him just one time when he performed in DC but came to the area a little too late, but I still jam with him daily along with his recordings. I'll always love him! Peace Added: September 9, 2006 X |
