Dexter was a beautiful human. He was nice to me when I saw him at the Jazz Showcase as a young kid. Sonny Stitt was on the same set and he acted like an a******. Dexter was a class act and a major influence in my life and playing. peace Added: August 13, 2005 X |

Joe Segal best summed it up: "Dexter Gordon, of course, is one of the very, very great- greater- greatest saxophonists who ever breathed." Added: July 31, 2005 X |

A few more comments about Dexter Gordon: I've been listening to jazz for many years - since I was a little kid (I started playing clarinet when I was nine). But it hasn't been until the last five or six years that I really started gravitating toward Dexter's music. His tone is so distinctive - warm, and just absolutely CAVERNOUS. I wish I was more of a poet so I could articulate why his sound and melodic sensibility resonate with me, but I can't explain it. I play alto in a jazz combo and a pop band now, and just recently started working on the tenor. And, there is no question about it, Dexter Gordon was the guy that made me want to pick up the tenor. There is nobody that sounds like him. Even before I picked up the tenor, Dex had a HUGE influence on my improvisation style. And just from a listener's standpoint, Dex swings SO hard, he's mesmerizing to listen to. I also totally dig it when he laid back and dropped notes behind the beat. He really laid down some style that foreshadowed funk, because funk is so much more about the space between the beats, than it is about the beats themselves (at least I think so). Sorry to be so verbose, but whenever I get a chance to talk about Dex I get a little carried away. Looking forward to the site! db. Added: July 28, 2005 X |

I can't wait. I feel that Dexter is the greatest melodic improviser ever, bar none. NO one can match how he preaches and hollers and whispers. Added: July 28, 2005 X |
