I was lucky enough to see Dexter play one time. What a great treat. Dexter is one of the greatest in the pantheon of tenor greats. What a cool cat!

Jazz is an irreversible road and Dex keeps me going passionately.

He was one of greatest prophets of jazz, for me the best. Rest in peace Dex.

I was really exposed to jazz music back during the early 90's (while I attended Spelman College) and I haven't been able to let it go. And just recently have I learned more about Dexter, his music, his movies - and am just impressed. I am one of those folks waiting for THE revival of jazz, or the 'jazz revolution', where the genre of music simply takes over everything we hear on the radio. Until then, I'll continue surveying the classics and supporting the local jazz stations. Much love to Mr. Gordon - a true pioneer.

I am watching the movie "Round Midnight" .... The music is so pure and free.

My brother John Stubblefield was a jazz musician as well and as I listen to Dexter Gordon in this movie, I am so reminded of his love and committment to the music. He spoke of Dexter often and his powerful contributions to the music.

Without a doubt, playing this music was not just a job, it was a heart felt pleasure. John made his transition 2 years ago, I hear the music of others all the time, but Dexter's music is fantasticly different. This is such a pleasure and I am thankful for Dexter's great legacy.

The year 1963 was a good one because it was during that time that I met Dex at the Appollo Theater where he was working with the Oliver Nelson Big Band backing up Billy Eckstine. With all of the great musicians who were in the band, Dex stood out to me. It wasn't just because of his physical stature, emposing as it was, but other characteristics that lead him to welcome me to the scene as though I was already one of the guys. It was a heart warming experience.

There is no doubt that Dex is universally held in the highest esteem because he embodied such admirable personal and artistic traits such as originality, eminence talent, joyous spirit, kindness, generousity, all communicated through his actions, speaking voice and that big sound of his tenor sax.

Dex Forever,

Garnett Brown

Growing up in Los Angeles was a treasure-trove of musical pleasures. Dex was one of many musicians that lived in the neighborhood and participated in the jam sessions in Mr. Pleasants garage. His dedication to his art was apparent from the beginning. What he has left us and generations to come, if you turn your kids on to the music, is that music is really the soul of man. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

The man with the sound. The man with the heart. I was driving west on Melrose Ave in Hollywood one fine afternoon when I passed an art gallery I knew to be running a show of**reat jazz photographer's work. I was with a young lady and wanted her to see the photos of some of these giants. That photo of Dex with the cigarette smoke was featured and she was knocked out with his music which was aslo playing. We went back to the my '68 Caddy Convertible, snapped that radio on and as fate would have it a guy on KKGO jazz station announced that Dex had passed just hours before. Haunted, we drove on and spent the rest of the night with his music.
So long pal. You will never really be 'gone' except in the musical sense of the word!

Dex, one of the nicest guys, and certainly one of the greatest players that I ever had the pleasure of spending some time with.My one word to sum him up has to be "Gent." A great loss to us all, but his music will live on for future generations to enjoy and be inspired by. Del Southon.
